Baptism

About Baptism

Baptism is a significant step in the life of a follower of Christ. It's a public declaration that reveals a prior, personal encounter with Jesus and the desire to surrender everything to Him. Baptism doesn't save a person, rather, it shows that a person has already been saved. It's a step of obedience that follows repentance of sin and faith in Christ's saving work. It's an outward expression of an inward reality, a visible sign of the invisible, amazing grace of God.

What Does Baptism Symbolize?

Christ's burial and resurrection

For you were buried with Christ when you were baptized. And with him you were raised to a new life because you trusted the mighty power of God, who raised Christ from the dead.

Colossians 2:12 (NLT)

My New Life as a Christian

Baptism doesn't make you a believer - it shows that you already believe. Baptism does not "save" you, because you are saved by grace through faith in Christ. Baptism is like a wedding ring – it is the outward symbol of the commitment you make in your heart.

What this means is that those who become Christians become new persons. They are not the same anymore, for the old life is gone. A new life has begun.

Corinthians 5:17 (NLT)

For we died and were buried with Christ by baptism. And just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glorious power of the Father, now we also may live new lives.

Romans 6:4 (NLT)

For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith - and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God - not by works, so that no one can boast.

Ephesians 2:8,9 (NIV)

Who Should Be Baptized?

Every person who has made a commitment of their life to Christ.

Those who accepted his message were baptized.

Acts 2:41 (NLT)

For if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.

Romans 10:9 (NLT)
